Attention Juniors!!  EHS College Planning Program for Juniors and Parents

The Essex High School Counseling Department will present a College Planning Program for Juniors and parents on Thursday, January 28th at 6:30 p.m. in the EHS auditorium.  In the first half of the program we will hear from Saint Michael’s Admissions on general factors to consider when choosing a college, what colleges are looking for in applications and how to best use your Junior and Senior years.  Additional information on college search resources and admission testing programs (ACT/SAT) will also be covered.

The second half of the program will include a menu of smaller subject-specific workshops; including factors to consider when thinking about majors in business, engineering, art, and music; technical center options; hands on computer search options; search strategies for students with learning or other disabilities; college athletics/NCAA requirements; applying to highly selective colleges; and alternative college options.

All Juniors are encouraged to attend for important information about post graduation

Essex High School and the Center for Technology-Essex have received a $50,000 grant to install solar panels at the school.  A total of ten Vermont schools were selected by the Vermont Dept of Education out of 23 submissions to receive the grant as part of a statewide Solar in Schools competition.  Sen. Bernie Sanders was able to secure these funds from the US Dept of Energy.  The project will include the installation of energy-generating photovoltaic solar panels and the incorporation of this green technology into the curriculum.  Sen. Sanders said that these programs “will help students and the people in their communities learn more about solar energy and smart ways to get to a greener future.”  Physics and Astronomy teacher Scott Pennington is the project leader.  Please feel free to contact him with any questions.  The Edge Academy in Essex was also a recipient of a grant.

Suicide Prevention Presentation

Essex High School will be hosting a suicide prevention presentation for adults on Thursday, February 11th from 7:00 to 8:30 pm. Current educational programming regarding suicide as well as crisis intervention strategies utilized in schools and treatment centers will be discussed. Suicide statistics, risk factors, and warning signs also will be reviewed. If you would like to attend, please register by calling the EHS Guidance Department at 879-5515 by Thursday, January 28th.

ACADEMIC SUPPORT TIME

Academic support time will now be from 7:55 a.m.to 8:05 a.m. each day at Essex High School. This time replaces our current homeroom time frame. This time will assist students who have shown, through first quarter work, that support is warranted based upon first quarter grades. Teachers will be in determined areas in the building. Department offices will have that information. This process will operate in two ways. First, students may seek assistance of their teacher(s) for various reasons. Secondly, teachers, with written notice (Academic Support Notice), shall require students to attend during this ten minute period for academic support. Attendance for students who receive written notice is mandatory. Failure to attend will result in consequences from administration. The intent here is to provide assistance for students who are not making adequate progress in their class(es) to ultimately lead to success in their academic experience at Essex High School. This fits in nicely with our Response to Failure process for all involved.

Composting in EHS Cafeterias

For the first time this year, students and faculty are now able to do away with their food scraps, the proper way; instead of having one big trash bin where students and faculty throw away all that they please, two compost bins are now available. ALL food scraps including meat and bones and paper products can be composted.  For a complete list please visit: www.cswd.net Students and faculty are strongly encouraged to think about where their “trash” will go. Composting not only lessens pressure on Vermont landfills by reducing organic matter (thus lowering production of greenhouse gasses), but also instills in youth a sense of environmental stewardship.  EHS continues to have recycling bins in the cafeteria, so please throw away responsibly.

H1N1 Information for Parents and Students

ATTENTION! ESSEX SKATING FACILITY PARKING REGULATIONS

CCSU and EHS security respectfully request that all individuals comply with our new parking regulations for the Essex Skating Facility. Recent events have exposed a dangerous situation with respect to pedestrian and vehicle traffic on the road between the rink and the school. We will be regulating parking according to the details explained HERE.
