ACADEMIC SUPPORT TIME
Academic support time will now be from 7:55 a.m.to 8:05 a.m. each day at Essex High School. This time replaces our current homeroom time frame. This time will assist students who have shown, through first quarter work, that support is warranted based upon first quarter grades.
Teachers will be in determined areas in the building. Department offices will have that information. This process will operate in two ways. First, students may seek assistance of their teacher(s) for various reasons. Secondly, teachers, with written notice (Academic Support Notice), shall require students to attend during this ten minute period for academic support. Attendance for students who receive written notice is mandatory. Failure to attend will result in consequences from administration.
The intent here is to provide assistance for students who are not making adequate progress in their class(es) to ultimately lead to success in their academic experience at Essex High School. This fits in nicely with our Response to Failure process for all involved.

Essex High School Theater Little Shop of Horrors opens Nov 19
“Come and see the mysterious plant, Audrey II, at Mushnik’s Skid Row Florist Shop!” Essex High School Theater proudly presents the musical production of Little Shop of Horrors, with performances November 19-21 at 7 pm. EHS is excited to feature the original Audrey II plant from the off-Broadway production of Little Shop of Horrors. It’s a fascinating creation that will amaze and thrill as its appetite grows.
Actors from Little Shop of Horrors with the Audrey II plant at a dress rehearsal on October 31. (L-R) Katie Reynolds, Lucy Alden, Jenna Rickson, Joey Behlendorf as Seymour, Casey Dubie, Gina Lord and Aiyanna Gutema as the “do wop girl” singers.

Director Susan Palmer (seated front R) and Music Director Glory Reinstein (seated front L) with cast of Little Shop of Horrors.
This dark musical comedy features rock and roll, doo-wop, and Motown numbers performed by Essex High School’s amazingly vocally talented students. Joey Behlendorf plays the downtrodden floral assistant, Seymour, who is living and working on skid row. Emy Geer is the sweet and somewhat bewildered Audrey, his coworker at the dingy florist shop, who dreams of a better life “somewhere that’s green.” Adam Langdon is her sadistic dentist boyfriend, famously played in the movie adaptation of the play by comedian Steve Martin. Scott Mechler voices the ever-growing plant which insidiously brings success to skid row, but at a cost. Brian Evans plays the cranky and conniving shop owner, Mr. Mushik. A sextet of gifted singers, Jenna Rickson, Gina Lord, Aiyanna Gutema, Casey Dubie, Lucy Alden, and Katie Reynolds perform as a doo-wop girl group from the 1950’s, providing music and commentary as the plot unfolds. The entire cast features more than 30 talented Essex High School students with over 30 more contributing to the pit orchestra, technical crew, stage crew and directing. Teamwork and talent are the secrets to Essex High’s 30 year tradition of Broadway-quality fall musicals. You will not want to miss this show, so mark your calendars November 19-21. Tickets go on sale 11/14 in the Essex High School lobby and can also be purchased by mail. For ticket details click here
Silent Auction Dinner Concert
The Essex High School Band Boosters will hold their third annual Silent Auction Dinner Concert on Friday, November 20, 2009. The event will be held in the EHS cafeteria from 5:00-6:45 p.m. A spaghetti dinner will be served, followed by a silent auction featuring an array of wonderful items donated by local businesses. Throughout the evening, EHS band students will perform chamber music. The dinner is intentionally held on the same night as the school’s musical Little Shop of Horrors, which begins at 7:00 p.m. in the EHS auditorium. Band director Trish Cornett states, “Our hope is that people will attend the dinner and auction, then stay for the musical. Folks get dinner and a show, and it can be a great night for the whole family.” Tickets to the Silent Auction Dinner Concert are available in the EHS main office, or by calling 857-7000 ext. 1262. (advance tickets are required) The cost is $6.00 each, or $5 each for a family of four or more. Tickets to the musical production Little Shop of Horrors are also available in the EHS main office. The cost is $6.00 for adults and $4.00 for students/seniors.
H1N1 FLU CLINIC
The H1N1 Flu clinic at Essex High School for November 16th has been postponed by the Health Department due to a shortage of vaccines. We will notify the school community as soon as we have a new date. Individuals who wish to try to access another clinic may call the 211 health resource line for clinics in the greater community.
Composting in EHS Cafeterias
For the first time this year, students and faculty are now able to do away with their food scraps, the proper way; instead of having one big trash bin where students and faculty throw away all that they please, two compost bins are now available. ALL food scraps including meat and bones and paper products can be composted. For a complete list please visit: www.cswd.net Students and faculty are strongly encouraged to think about where their “trash” will go. Composting not only lessens pressure on Vermont landfills by reducing organic matter (thus lowering production of greenhouse gasses), but also instills in youth a sense of environmental stewardship. EHS continues to have recycling bins in the cafeteria, so please throw away responsibly.
